Awards Season, Movie Making and Social Media Moving into Entertainment

"A lot of nominated shows this year are actually on Netflix... Enjoy it while it lasts, Netflix. Because you're not going to be feeling so smug in a couple of years when SnapChat is up here accepting Best Drama." ~ Amy Poehler, at the 2014 Golden Globes

And here we are, with Netflix, Amazon and Apple having had multiple Academy award nominations and wins - including 19 this year (down from 37 in 2022). Who’s next? First, a recap of all the 2023 winners so far, before the big Oscars broadcast this Sunday March 12: Golden Globes, Critics Choice, BAFTA, SAG, Independent Spirit Awards. There have been many predictions this week, many celebrations for the record breaking cast of “Everything everywhere all at once”, some nomination controversies, still chatter over last years the infamous slap, and outrage over this Entertainment Weekly article polling voters today. It’s always about the drama, so why would this year be any different? Now onto social media and my original quote above…

Aside from being one of my favorite ways to follow awards shows - for the commentary and clips - social platforms are continuing to extend their posting time, and dipping their toes into streaming, broadcasting, and series, as they further step into the world of entertainment. While social platforms have all expanded into short form video (i.e. Youtube Shorts, Pinterest Idea Pins), the biggest social platform, TikTok, announced the launch of series, exclusive content creators can produce and put behind a paywall (anywhere from $1 to $190). One Series collection can include up to 80 videos, each up to 20 minutes long. This feels very Quibi to me, but let’s see.

What does all of this mean? Firstly, there is A LOT of talent out there, with ideas often better that are actually getting produced. So if you are a creator of any variety, now is the time to experiment and share your unique gifts and insight with the world. I don’t think people will fancy paying for a million more services, but if you use the time wisely, and the tools it offers, and spread your work around on different platforms, the exposure could be infinite. You never know who is watching and where it could lead.
